On June 6, 1813 British and American Forces met in a a bloody night action at the Gage House, Stoney Creek, modern-day Hamilton Ontario. This action was intended by the British to hold the Americans in place to allow them to continue their retreat from the Niagara Region back to York (Toronto, Ontario) and Kingston (Ontario). The result of this battle was the capture of the two commanding American Generals Chandler and Winder and the retreat of American Forces back to the Niagara River. This also allowed the British to push forward reinforcements and supplies which ultimately drove the Americans out of Upper Canada (Ontario) in December of 1813.
